What is Reiki?: with The Academy of Reiki!

One of the most effective self-help methods to emerge from the upsurge in alternative therapies over the past two decades is REIKI. REIKI (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning "Universe Life Energy", the vital, creative force that flows through everything. When used as a therapy, referred to as the Usui System of Natural Healing, it an energy balancing technique for improving and maintaining health, based on the principal that a balanced energy system leads to a healthy mind and body.

In these difficult times, many people are looking for something with which to enrich their lives. Whether this enrichment takes the form of relief from pain and stress (physical, emotional or mental), the ability to make better quality choices or nourishment of the spiritual aspect of their being, millions of people throughout the world use REIKI for this purpose.

REIKI is not learned in the sense of becoming proficient in a technique, but rather learning to work with energy to achieve inner harmony, which leads, in turn, to health and well being. It does not depend on one's intellectual capacity as it is passed from Teacher to student through the transfer of energy and thus is available to everyone regardless of age, education or culture.

REIKI is a gift with many benefits.

Here are a few areas in which it has been helpful.

" Relieving pain and discomfort of chronic diseases

" Day to living (headaches, colds, flu, cuts, burns, fatigue, stomach upsets, sprains etc)

" Promoting recovery from surgery

" Strengthening the immune system and increasing vitality, thus reducing the incidence of illness and injury

" Reducing stress and tension and promoting relaxation

" Providing the equivalent of about 3 hours sleep

" Replenishing and re-vitalising depleted energy

" Enhancing creativity through better communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain

" A unique and powerful tool for personal growth and improving the quality of life

" Experiencing inner strength, love for ourselves, and the ability to communicate these expressions of love and strength to others

" Helping us take responsibility for our lives and to experience positive feelings of balanced wellness

" Helping to change our mode of belief systems and to release negative feelings about people and past experiences

The Academy of Reiki conducts workshops in all aspects of Reiki, for those wishing to learn for their own benefit, those wishing to become a therapist and also for those wishing to become a Reiki Master/Teacher. Academy of Reiki.

Making Mistakes and Movin on: with Clayfield Counselling!

Have you ever noticed how some people just seem to walk through life moving from strength to strength, while others make one mistake, get knocked down and never seem to be able to recover? Everyone makes mistakes, there's no harm in getting things wrong occasionally but problems occur when you are reluctant to try something new for fear of making a mistake, or when you use a mistake as an excuse to give up.

Find the silver lining

Our mistakes can make us better, stronger and wiser if we are willing to pay attention and change. We have to be willing to admit our failures and accept responsibility for our actions though, and this is where many people fall down. It's so common to see someone make the same mistake over and over again and each time things begin to unravel, they will blame everyone else except themselves. People often make decisions according to bad habits; they will be attracted to the same kind of unhealthy person or they'll continue to have the same argument with a loved one; sometimes for years. For some the habit is alcohol or drugs and for others it's violence or sexual addiction. Commonly these habits are learned through watching our adult caregivers and other influential people during our childhood and adolescence. All of these habits result in harm to oneself and to others and all of these habits can be changed. Each time we make a mistake we are presented with an opportunity to learn. Sometimes the lesson isn't clear and we have to really stop and think but there is always something positive to take away from even the most negative experience. Don't accept defeat

When Donald Trump failed to lower his prices in order to challenge his competitors he lost his fortune but instead of giving up, he chose to work his way back to the top again. He didn't allow his mistake to shame him into inertia; he worked his way back up the corporate ladder and is now one of the wealthiest men in the world.

Mistakes are only a problem if they cause us to doubt ourselves. It's when we stop believing in our own abilities that we cease trying to succeed; it's then that we're defeated before we even try.

Change the pattern

If you see a pattern in your life that continually results in problems or heartache, stop what you're doing and rethink your behaviour. Are you repeating a habit you've learned during childhood? Perhaps it's self talk that's the problem and you're telling yourself something that just isn't true for you anymore? Sometimes the pattern is so heavily entrenched that it can be difficult to see it for what it is. This is when counselling can really help.

A counsellor is often able to identify a habit or learned behaviour that keeps causing problems for you in your life and can assist you with strategies to change the behaviour. If you'd like some help in changing an old habit or learned behaviour, why not give us a call and make an appointment? It doesn't matter what your upbringing was like or how many mistakes you've made in the past. Your future is a blank canvas and whether or not a masterpiece will ever be revealed is entirely up to you. So go on, choose a paintbrush- what will you paint today?

Should Health Insurance Really Cover Massage therapy in Australia: with Brandon Raynor!

Should Health Insurance really cover massage therapy in Australia? by Brandon Raynor (Email: brandon@brandonraynor.com) Health Care Rebates and Health Insurance in the Massage Industry in Australia

There has been a lot of fuss made about Health Care Rebates in Australia for massage therapists over the last 5 to 8 years. Some people and some schools seem to think this is one of the most important aspects of a persons massage training criteria. We at Brandon Raynors School of Natural Therapies often get asked the question "Can I give Health Care Rebates to clients after completing your course?"

I would like to discuss why I have an opposing point of view to many in the industry as to the importance and relevance of these rebates.

Insurance for most things is generally to cover an unexpected event that is very costly. For example a car accident, a ship sinking, your house catching on fire. These are generally events with a low likelihood of occurring but with very costly effects when they do occur. Having insurance generally spreads the risk that these events will bankrupt a person or company out to many individuals. In other words customers of an insurance company all pay a certain amount of money to create a pool of money ( Minus the insurance companies fees) in order to pay for some unexpected costly event.

This was also the original idea behind health insurance. Pay the insurance company some money so that if you have a heart attack then you can get the best treatment without a huge sum coming out of your account all at once.

This idea does not fit with the massage industry. Massage is Preventative medicine, in its best form, and only sometimes used to treat specific injuries. What's more, even when used in its non preventative form, massage is not a high cost treatment like many medical procedures. Even getting 50 massage treatments may only cost $3000 or less, which is the amount many people will spend on a car if it blows a head gasket or has some other problem.

Let me discuss this further. Preventative medicine is things that you do to keep you healthy. For example, eating healthy foods, exercise, relaxation, meditation, yoga, and massage. Stress is a part of everyone's life. It only really becomes a major problem when it builds up too much. Preventative medicine techniques such as massage stop that build up happening. This is a predictable event, just as getting hungry is a predictable event. This should not be covered by insurance, as I mentioned before, as insurance covering predictable regular events is not its intended purpose. In fact, when insurance covers predictable regular events like getting a massage to keep stress levels down and prevent muscle tightness from developing then it adds an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy and cost to the transaction.

So instead of a person doing a simple financial transaction by paying a practitioner $60 for a massage, which only takes about 3 minutes or less of administrative time, a person has to get a receipt, take it to their health fund, get them to refund the money etc... Not only that but the practitioner has a lot of compliance time and money wasted by having to fulfill the criteria that the health fund want in order to get a provider number etc....

In other words something economically simple has become economically complicated but achieves nothing more. A lot more people being paid to put pens to paper, and more stress created complying with regulations but the real actual produce was still one massage treatment. Not only that but the government has gotten involved by subsidizing health funds so now we have more tax money taken out of our pockets to pay bureaucrats to keep this ludicrous system going.

Imagine if we did that for every other simple economic transaction that goes into preventative medicine. Every time I go to the health food shop I get the receipts mail them off to an insurance company and get them to pay me back some of the money ( minus fees) that I just recently sent them for my insurance coverage. Its crazy.

The way this has all come about is because the medical industry is not preventative based and some people in the natural health industry have very low self esteem about what they are doing and feel that they need to be "recognized" by the medical industry to be respectable. So we have this crazy system of a preventative medicine technique such as massage fitting into a system that is designed for acute care.

The orthodox medical profession is designed mostly to treat sudden onset problems such as heart attacks and car accidents and this of course it does better than preventative medicine and these can be very costly. However it is not as successful in keeping people healthy as a preventative medicine system.

So the major use of massage in a health system should be to keep people destressed and well but even when massage is also used for people that have injuries or chronic problems massage is not so expensive that having insurance is required. As I mentioned earlier very few people, even when really not well, would require more than 50 1 hour massage treatments. Even if they required this many it would only cost $3000 at $60 a treatment. Considering also that 50 treatments would be spread out over several months this is hardly an unbearable expense for most people. Certainly not more than the cost of many common problems that occur periodically with automobiles.

So this is why I do not subscribe to being part of this crazy system nor do I want to encourage it.

I also believe that there is a danger to this system in that many people when they choose their training options think that this is very important. The reality is its not. The most important thing for a person when they consider their training options are the quality of the massage course that they want to undertake. Actually less than 20% of people have even subscribed to the highest levels of coverage with health funds and there is not benefit to the practitioner from these patients having this coverage anyway. The only thing the practitioner has to be concerned about in his early stages of having a clinic is not to lose potential clients. What we recommend is that people can offer a discount for the first treatment to these people to get them "in the door" so to speak, and then give them such a good treatment that they will want to come back, even if they don't get their $10 back from their health fund. So compete on the basis of giving a quality treatment rather than on whether you can fit into an insane bureaucratic system of health rebates.

If a person focuses on becoming an outstanding practitioner and having excellent customer service skills, then they will soon have more clients than they can treat. They will no longer be so desperate for clients that they need to offer discounts to get people "in the door". They will be able to choose their clients or even raise their rates if they desire.

A course that trains people to be excellent massage therapists is what people should look for when choosing a course to undertake for their training and that's what we aspire to in our training techniques.

Ice Cream Lies with Joanne Hay

Ask any pig farmer, how they fatten up their pigs before slaughter and they will tell you, “feed them grains and skimmed milk.” Funny, that’s just what most modern dieticians will put you on to lose weight! While dairy farmers of bygone days always kept pigs and fed them the skimmed milk left over from butter and cream making, this is no longer the case. Now dairy corporations pick up the milk from the farmer and take care of the rest at their factory. So we have a problem.

What do dairy factories do with the skimmed milk after thay make butter and cream? They don’t have a quaint little pig sty out the back that’s for sure. Dairy corporations, with the help of some friends in government nutrition departments, have invented a way to get rid of ’skim’ milk as they slyly renamed it. “Sell it to the fatties” as a diet food. So after a week of trying to be strong and drinking skimmed milk, fattie begins to crave for what is missing from ’skim’ milk - the fat. They find themselves at the freezer section of the supermarket, guiltily salivating over the brightly coloured packaging of litres upon litres of delicious ice cream. Unfortunately along with the cream, comes refined sugar, highly refined wheat (maltodextrin) and a whole host of scary chemicals. If you want to keep enjoying your commercial ice cream treats, please do not read any further. (more…)

Subject: What it means to be Australian

Being Australian is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

Oh and...only in Australia can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in Australia do supermarkets make sick people walk all the way to the back of the shop to get their prescriptions while healthy People can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in Australia do people order double cheeseburgers, large Fries and a DIET coke.

Only in Australian do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars on the drive and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage.

Only in Australia do we use answering machines to screen calls and then have call waiting so we won't miss a call from someone we didn't want to talk to in the first place.

Quote of the week!

Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don’ts. Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me . . . Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”Shel Silverstein, writer

For a Good Cause: Why support The Abused Child Trust?

It is a sad fact that thousands of Queensland Children suffer some form of child abuse every year. But the Abused Child Trust can help. The Trust provides prevention and treatment programmes for families experiencing, or at risk of, child abuse or neglect. These programmes offer the specialised help of a social worker, psychologist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist and nurse to assist individuals and families to resolve the issues that maintain destructive patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour - helping them break the cycle of abuse. The Abused Child Trust needs your assistance to continue this work.
