New Women's Weight Loss Centre Exposes:Why Diets Don't Work!

95 percent of people who go on weight loss diets regain all the weight they have lost plus more within two years and on any given day of the year 30 percent of young women are on a diet, according to The Eating Disorders Association Inc Qld.

The owner of a new women's weight loss and exercise centre opening this week at Sunnybank Hills, Tracey Johnson, says the weight loss industry is misleading people to believe dieting works, when in fact most diets are not a long-term solution and may be unhealthy.

"It's common for people to blame themselves if they fail on a diet, but there are usually reasons why they haven't succeeded that they are not aware of," Mrs Johnson said.

"For instance, dieting can reduce your metabolism so you burn energy slower and that can stop you from losing weight. Most diets are not sustainable which leads to yo-yo dieting, instead of a long-term solution."

Most diets focus on quick fixes, rather than education through knowledge and understanding, Mrs Johnson said. "The weight loss industry creates dieting myths that need to be replaced with facts, like these:

  • " Myth: If you exercise for half an hour three times a week you will lose weight. Fact: You can't lose weight if you are consuming more calories in a day than you burn during 30 minutes of daily exercise.
  • " Myth: If you strip your diet of protein, especially red meat, you will lose weight. Fact: Protein is necessary to build muscle mass and muscle tissue burns calories. Eating protein like red meat will mean you lose weight because muscle is heavier than fat. It will also mean you lose the ability to keep the weight off.
  • " Myth: If you want to know exactly what to eat, rely on pre-packaged foods. Fact: Pre-packaged 'diet' foods are expensive and encourage people to become dependent on the supplier to keep weight off. A better solution is learning how to prepare regular supermarket foods in the right portion sizes for lasting weight loss.
  • " Myth: If you replace your food with special diet milkshakes your weight problems will be over. Fact: Rapid weight loss solutions like this mean you end up with lots of flab because resistance-based exercise is necessary to tone the body. This encourages yo-yo dieting instead of healthy eating habits that are sustainable for life.
  • " Myth: Surgical removal of excess body fat gives you a more attractive body. Fact: If you take away the fat cells around your middle and thighs, then keep eating the same way, you are likely to end up with a huge bottom and massive breasts. Remaining fat cells have to absorb the extra fat, so you could end up with a very misshapen body.
  • " Myth: Taking a pill is an easy way to lose weight. Fact: Make sure you stay near a toilet and remember your body needs some fats to survive. Weight loss pills deny your body access to fat, so just wait for the wrinkles!

Healthy Inspirations combines a resistance-based exercise circuit with healthy eating plans based on supermarket foods, relaxation and one-on-one support three times a week for lasting weight loss.

The proven weight loss program that has helped more than 4,000 Australian women lose weight and keep it off, said Mrs Johnson.

"We help women make lasting health changes through new lifestyle habits. The 25 Healthy Inspirations centres throughout Australia have proven the weight loss program can help women prevent and manage chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes.

"Healthy lifestyle changes don't have to cost a cent, but if you want one-on-one support, someone to hold you accountable, and advice about what normal foods to eat so you can lose weight while exercising to protect your metabolism - Healthy Inspirations can help.

"The Healthy Inspirations weight loss program was developed by Australia's leading dietitians and exercise scientists and is subject to ongoing testing and development.

"We help women learn new healthy lifestyle habits that last for life," Mrs Johnson said.

One of the centre's Lifestyle Consultants, Stacey Stapylton, lost 16kg after she had her first child through common sense healthy eating and exercising at home.

"Now I am doing the Healthy Inspirations program I realise there is so much to learn about how to eat and exercise effectively to lose weight. I used to read nutrition labels and teach myself, but it helps so much if a dietitian tells you what to look for.

"If you are trying to lose weight by yourself, having someone to teach you tips for effective eating and exercise, and hold you accountable, can really help to boost your momentum so you reach your goals faster," Ms Stapylton said.

Lifestyle Consultant, Rebecca Dent, experienced eating disorders first hand when she suffered and overcame bulimia.

"At first I didn't let myself eat certain foods, then my eating habits spiraled out of control and I began to see and feel that food was evil," Ms Dent said. "But food is a positive thing, you just need to know what and how much to eat and when. It's not necessarily about the right or wrong types of food, it's how you bring them together."

"I gained 18kg when I was traveling and felt like I wasn't who I used to be socially. I wanted to be my younger self again, thinking that was a better me. Then I discovered I wasn't defined by my weight and I could choose to improve all aspects of my life. Controlling my weight in a healthy way became more of a rewarding experience than escaping through my weakness." The Sunnybank Hills centre will also house a beautician, massage therapist, life coach, naturopath, aromatherapist and image consultant, and offer women-only workshops on parenting, women's health and self development.

Insomnia - Sleeplessness: with Craig Hitchins ND!

Insomnia is one of those things that all of us will come to experience at some point in our lives. Whilst there is nothing uncommon about having a restless night or waking up through out the night once in a while, having constant re-occurring bouts of this or worse still, being unable to sleep at all, is not. We need to sleep, it is a necessity for proper health and wellbeing. You need only recall how good you feel after you have had a really good night's sleep. The reason for this is that you regenerate , rest, recharge and file away at all levels when you sleep. All our days thoughts and experiences are filed away, our body rebuilds and recharges at the physical level and energetically we are clearing and surging energies to ensure vital energies are flowing to all the right places. When this natural rythm is thrown out, we experience poor health, anxiety, depression, bouts of irritability and more. Sleep deprivation is more dangerous than driving drunk! It has a similar effect on the body and functions needed for such judgements and tasks. Getting less than the recommended eight hours for an adult will lead to breakdowns in your health eventually. So you see sleep is very important for good health and particularly recovery from illness.Without going into the very boring and somewhat confusing scientific explanation of sleep, I will endeavour to give you some simple and tried remedies for insomnia and sleep disorders that you can use at home.

If it only happens once in a while, it is sleeplessness; if it happens for weeks or months, it is insomnia. It is said that 100 million Americans have insomnia, to one degree or another, and take 600 tons of sleeping pills each year to avoid it. About seven times as many women as men experience the problem. Sleeping pills are second only to aspirin sales in the U.S.

Side effects from sleeping pills includes anxiety, depression, skin rashes, irritability, loss of appetite, poor coordination, digestive disturbances, difficulty with vision, confusion, dizziness, high blood pressure, circulatory and respiration disorders, breakdown of parts of the blood (such as the white blood cells which fight infection), damage to the central nervous system, memory problems, and liver and kidney damage.

The experts tell us that, if you go to bed on time, have a current of fresh air in the room, and lay there quietly you will get enough rest even though you do not seem to fall asleep as quickly as you might wish. Many people who report not getting to sleep at night actually slept quite a bit without realizing it.
Many people have a hard time getting to sleep at night because of restless leg syndrome . These people are awakened by legs which twitch or kick.

There are others who experience sleep apnea. This occurs when the person, while asleep, stops breathing for as long as two minutes at a time. He then gasps for breath and may awaken. This can happen as many as 200 times at night. Those with sleep apnea tend to have higher than normal blood pressure, are more likely to have strokes, and are at greater risk of heart disease. These people also have a higher incidence of emotional and psychotic problems.

Overeating, eating too close to bedtime, and eating bad food can produce sleeplessness or insomnia. Systemic disorders in the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, digestive organs, endocrines, and brain can all affect sleep.

A lack of calcium and magnesium can cause you to wake up after a few hours and be unable to return to sleep and can be responsible for the twitches etc in the legs. Eat nutritious food. Ensure good amount of Vitamin B complex is in the diet, if not then supplement.
Foods with the amino acid, tryptophan, promotes sleep. These include figs, dates, milk and whole grain crackers.

Avoid cheese, bacon, chocolate, ham, sausage, and wine before bedtime. Better yet, keep those junk foods entirely out of your diet. Do not eat eggplant, sauerkraut, potatoes, sugar, spinach, or tomatoes before retiring. All the foods in this paragraph contain tyramine, which increases the release of norepinephrine, a brain stimulant. Other foods which keep people awake include fatty foods, sugar, white flour, salt, monosodium glutamate (MSG), chemical preservatives, additives, and allergenic foods. Obtain enough exercise during the day, with some of it being out-of-doors. Exercise regularly in the late afternoon or early evening, but not right before bedtime. Before bedtime go outside and walk around quietly in the fresh air for 30 to 45 minutes. Take a hot bath (not a shower) an hour or two before bedtime.

Some people need to have the bedroom quiet. Others need some sound to mask background noise. In such cases, have a fan turned on.
Regularity in your habits is important. This is vital to good sleep. Always go to bed at the same time, and get up at a definite time. The body has normal rhythmic cycles. People with regular habits have faster reaction time and are happier than those with irregular sleeping times. Getting up each morning at the right time will help you go to sleep at the right time each night.

For some people, daytime naps make it more difficult to sleep at night. But, for some older people, a little rest before mealtime during the day helps them, so that any sleeplessness at night never fatigues them.
If you cannot sleep, you can just lay there, relax, and rest. This is nearly as good as sleep. Or you can get up and do something quietly and calmly for a short time and then go back to bed and to sleep. One excellent method is to go outside and breath the fresh air, look up at the stars, breath some more fresh air and then go back to bed and to sleep. If you are wakeful one night, do not nap the next day, and you will be more likely to go right to sleep that night.

Go to bed early when you are sleepy

Some take melatonin or calcium to help them go to sleep. These are both natural and safe aids in promoting sleep.

The room temperature should be 60o-65o F. If the room is too warm, you are more likely to move about more and awaken more frequently. The problem is a lack of air. If you want a restful night's sleep, make sure a little current of air is passing through your room, even in the winter. You cannot sleep well when it is stuffy. Do not take sleeping pills. They have pain relievers, bromides, antihistamines, and/or scopolamine. These are ineffective and produce unpleasant side effects. Alcohol, barbiturates, and hypnotics do not solve the sleep problem, but worsen it. Alcohol disrupts sleep later in the night. Nicotine appears to be calming, but it is actually a neuro-stimulant.

Do not take caffeine substances after lunch. Do not take nasal decongestants and other cold medications. They stimulate many people and keep them from getting to sleep.

Restless leg syndrome can be a problem. Calcium, potassium, magnesium, and zinc supplements help eliminate that problem. In addition, make sure you are not iron deficient.

Studies reveal that, in countries where people regularly nap during the day, there are less accidents, and productivity is higher. The important factor here is consistency. Be regular in your hours for sleep at night. If you nap during the day, be regular in that. If you nap, generally keep your naps short less than an hour at a time.

Herbal teas which help increase sleepiness include hop tea, catnip, valerian, passionflower and chamomile. Hypericum (St John's Wort) useful also if insomnia is accompanied by depression. But do not rely on herb tea, to help get you to sleep every night.

Make sure you have a good mattress to sleep on. I hope this has given you a few methods to use first before resorting to the nasty drugs and pills again next time you have a sleepless night. Until next time. Best of health to you. Craig Hitchens (B.Sc.Nat.)

Assiram Natural Therapies: Treating the Root Cause Rather than the Symptoms!

We are the same company with a New look and name. Great Aussie Backrub clinics have had a name change and a long awaited image overhaul. The new name Assiram Natural Therapies (pronounced As-sy-ram) means "place of rest" and represents the progression away from a massage centre to a professional natural therapies clinic. In addition to remedial massage Assiram offers Acupuncture and Osteopathy. All our therapists are covered by most of the recognised health funds.

The change in name was completed to reflect the level of professionalism that the clinics offer. The Proprietor Marissa Buckley says the reason for the clinic's success over the past 18 months has been the quality of service offered and level of professionalism of clinic staff. "Our clients return because we offer them solutions to manage their conditions and show them ways in which they can prevent any further injuries or strain," Marissa said. "We like to treat the root cause of the problem, rather than just the symptoms."

Marissa purchased the business after being a client herself for a number of years. After many years working in a busy city office, she understands the stresses that affects her clients on a day to day basis. She was impressed by the improvement in her health and well being and wanted to offer this to the stressed out Brisbane city workers. "Lifestyles are becoming increasingly busy and stressful. Alleviating that stress has become a full time business for us!" Marissa said, "People are becoming more aware about the need to look after themselves physcially & mentally. We aim to help them do this."

Companies are also seeking to reward staff and reduce sick-days by offering workplace massage. Our corporate backrub program still operates under the name The Great Aussie Backrub Co. you can find more details about corporate massage programs under

Make Friends With Amigo Juice: for Optimal Wellness and Longevity!

We all want to live long and healthy lives, and to be able to enjoy our later years with vigor. What gets in the way, of course, is the natural process of aging. Our bodies deteriorate and that is largely due to the chemical process of oxidation. Like bread going stale and brittle when left in the air, our cells gradually oxidise and become less and less functional. As we get older our bodies therefore produce less of the very agents needed to fight this aging process, and so we need extra anti-oxidants in our diet to supplement the anti-oxidants the body itself makes internally.

I'd like to tell you about an anti-oxidant formula called Amigo Juice that is vastly superior to all the "berry hype" that's going on out there. The focus for me is the product: the fact that they are network marketing Amigo Juice is irrelevant, though you can easily make a useful and ethical extra income if you so wish.

Alternative doctor" Dr. Keith Scott-Mumby took the trouble to research this product and spoke with the formulator (not the sales company founder). This guy has had many years in the business, developing products that are sold by alternative physicians, and other health professionals. Keith's first question was: are you sure the potency of the product is undiminished by being a powder formulation? It's the question you would probably want to ask.

He reminded Keith that the key element of the Mangosteen is the Pericarp, which won't dissolve anyway. That means all the mangosteen "juice" out there is just a suspension of powder in some other liquid. Mangosteen is very bitter and so sugary fruit juices are used to mask the flavour. These sticky passenger substances go ahead of the mangosteen in attracting chelators and so are counter-productive, as well as rotting your teeth.

In Amigo Juice, the flavour is disguised by its companions: Açaí and Goji berry. Açaí is a strictly tropical plant and won't survive travel to higher latitudes. It has to be dried quickly. Most manufacturers use the cheaper drum drying process, which requires the addition of maltodextrin (Uuggh!). Some products are 30- 40% maltodextrin. Amigo Juice has none, because it is freeze-dried.

The Açaí berry grows on majestic palm trees in the Amazon Rainforest and looks like a purple marble or grape. Açaí has a delicious tropical berry flavor and provides exceptional nutrition. Açaí contains high levels of Antioxidants, Omega Fatty Acids (healthy fats), Iron, Amino Acids, Fiber, and many other vitamins and minerals.

The people living in the Amazon region in Northern Brazil, have consumed Açaí for hundreds of years and it's healing and sustaining powers are legendary. Açaí is known to harness the following properties: Antioxidant, Antibacterial, Anti-inflammatory, Antimutagenic, Cardiovascular System. An amazingly high concentration of antioxidants contributes to combating premature aging.

The proanthocyanidine contents in Açaí Berries are 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins (these are the purple colored antioxidants) of red wine per volume. Although the French have a high fat diet, they have a low incidence of cardio vascular disease compared to the western countries. They contribute this factor to their consumption of red wine.

Goji berry is probably the most studied of all the fashionable berries. It really is a remarkable plant substance. Incidentally, it is not the same as wolfberry.Wolfberry is a wonderful fruit, with massive nutritional values, but Goji is likened to "the mother of wolfberry". It's science is formidable: for example, programmed apoptosis or cell death for renegade tumor cells..

Finally, and we should have realized this without being reminded: all liquid fruit juices are pasteurized by law.

You find other manufacturers keeping quiet about this one! I don't need to tell my intelligent readers that such heat processing is deleterious to the nutritional values.

Is Canola Oil Healthy? By Joanne Hay

I’ve just read a post called “When did you last eat a shirt” on, an enjoyable read about the inappropriateness of cotton seed oil in the human diet. In the comments section following, a discussion about canola oil included a comment from the author of the post which greatly distrubed me. She says, “There’s nothing wrong with canola oil, it’s actually quite healthy - as long as you buy organic.

I beg to differ (more…)

Laughter is the best medicine!

Some self-evident truths about pets...

Buy a dog a toy and it will play with it forever. Buy a cat a present and it will play with the wrapper for 10 minutes.

Although cats are rather delicate creatures, and they are subject to a good many ailments, I never heard of one who suffered from insomnia.

Dogs and cats instinctively know the exact moment their owners will wake up. Then they wake them 10 minutes sooner.

Dog's have owners. Cat's have staff.

Dogs shed, cats shred.

I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult?

No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as the dog does.

I hope to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.

People that hate cats will come back as dogs in their next life.
