It's your Brain, Heal it:with Gina Lofaro!

To the sufferer of an anxiety disorder … help is inside of you.

Take it from one who knows, aside from your family GP or counsellor, the next person you need to consult for healing, is yourself.

It's your brain, heal it.

When you suffer from an anxiety disorder, it feels like there is an almost palpable black cloud surrounding your head. You feel as though you walk in shadows that you can't escape from, and that no one has a kind word to say to you. You, in turn, find very little kindness within yourself to offer to others. And yet, all you want, what you crave and yearn for, is for someone to put their arm around you and make you their sole responsibility for however long it takes you to return to your own normalcy. You want that person to wrap you in their warmth, rub your back and speak softly to you about how it's all going to be ok and that they have the answer.

Naturally enough, this isn't ever going to happen. People have busy lives, and let's face it, people who are NOT suffering from anxiety disorder, have no idea what you are going through. You reach for help and family tell you that you have nothing to complain about, and you should snap out of it. You tell your spouse that the reason you didn't get changed out of your pyjamas the entire day is because you weren't feeling well. He rolls his eyes and you know that he's thinking, "Yeah, you never feel well these days". As he steps over the garbage bag you didn't even get around to taking out, on his way to the table, where dinner has not been prepared, your anxiety builds even further, wondering how he's going to take it this time. The tension builds between you and something's got to give.

You start to wonder if what you really want is just to be left to wallow in your misery. "Why doesn't everyone just leave me alone? Everyone's on my case, no on understands what I'm going through." Well, they may truly be interested in helping you, but you may have pushed them away, making them feel just as insignificant to your plight, as you feel it is to yourself.

I think of Oliver Hardy saying "that's another fine mess you've gotten us into!" and I think how that relates to our own inner struggle. The anxiety and depression you feel fight against the desire to be well again, and you beat yourself up thinking you CAUSED it to happen to you in the first place. Well, in some ways, you did. But now is the time to build defences against the negativity. The other little cartoon catch phrase I hear in my head at times is ... "And STAY out!!" picturing someone throwing a cat out the door by the scruff of the neck. The cat is your anxieties. Realise that it's a visitor to your home and wants to be fed and stroked and molly-coddled, but that it is an entirely selfish entity, which can run your home if you allow it to. It causes damage to your property, makes messes all over your floor and comes and goes as it pleases. Grab the thing by the scruff of the neck, boot it out the door and tell it to stay the hell away.

You simply cannot allow this dark cloud to descend any further. It's up to you to find out what medicine you need to clear it away. Medicine may mean medication or it may mean therapy of some kind, or both. To me, it depends upon how far the depression has brought you down. But ultimately, your doctor will know how best to treat your ailment. And if you are not comfortable with the first doctor you see, seek another. It's of utmost importance that you find a medical professional who is not only qualified to deal with your condition, but with whom you can enjoy a comfortable rapport. After all, the last thing you want is to dread the appointment with your doctor, who is supposed to be helping you to take care of your pursuit of mental health.

Above all, realise that that dark cloud can be lifted. Medication can work to speed up that progress, and while many people think that beginning a course of antidepressants will mean that they are hopelessly inadequate when it comes to running their own life, it can actually be a safety net. Even mild antidepressants can help you to see the light of day, and focus upon what makes you feel good within yourself. Over time, your positive thought processes become more easily achieved, and you begin to bring about a change of outlook. Once this occurs, you are well on your road to recovery. From there, it is a matter of regular consultation with your doctor to determine if and when to begin reducing the medication.

Rather than torture yourself with the realisation that you require medication to heal your mind, consider this: If your blood pressure was elevated and required tablets daily to regulate it, would you even flinch as the doctor hands you the prescription? Do not fall prey to the stigma that depression is a voluntary state of mind, or that it takes a weak person to succumb to it. Life is not always the proverbial bowl of cherries, but you can sure go out and plant a seed. or visit

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:with Tom Cowan!

Question: I am a 45-year-old woman and have been suffering with chronic fatigue syndrome for three years now. It seems I have tried everything. For a short time I got better but now I feel no better off than I did two and a half years ago. Currently, I am taking an antidepressant and that helps me feel better, but I don’t feel my “problem” has ever been addressed. Can you help?

Answer: I hope so. Let me tell you about two recent patients of mine who have similar stories. Both had life-altering symptoms to the point where they were both considering leaving their careers and going on disability. Both had tried many diets, supplements, antiviral therapy, fasting programs, herbs, antidepressants, and other conventional and unconventional treatments. Basically nothing had helped. I explained to them my view of chronic fatigue syndrome which I will admit even to me seems almost absurdly simple. That is, our energy level, or our energy resource, is like a flowing river. This river has many tributaries or areas to which our energy is diverted.

The main energy “drain” for most of us is the digestion of our food. When we ease this energy drain going to digesting our food, we suddenly have a huge reserve available for tasks such as muscle function, thinking, exercise or other more creative pursuits. This is the essence of chronic fatigue syndrome. There is a profound energy shift from such tasks as immune function, muscle activity, thinking and creativity toward simple digestion of food. All of the etiologies discussed in chronic fatigue syndrome such as viral infections, trace mineral deficiencies, depression, etc., just contribute to poor digestion or poor choices in terms of effective therapy. For example, being depressed often leads to sugar addiction or eating lots of chocolate which makes digestion even worse.

The main contributing factors I have found in making the digestion weak and a greedy energy drain are eating processed food and the overconsumption of carbohydrate-type food, even whole grains. The simple intervention I recommended with these two patients, which in both has had dramatic and lasting results, is fairly simple.

* First, they are to eat no more than 10-15% of their diet as carbohydrate-type food, including grains, pasta, flour, fruits, sugars, fruit juice, etc. and the only allowable grains are either fermented (sourdough) bread or whole grains like those discussed in Nourishing Traditions. This is to continue for six months. In this time the bulk of their food is various organic organ meats, fish, fowl, cultured raw milk products, raw butter, yogurt, olive oil, flax seed oil and some coconut milk on a daily basis. To this is added as many fresh vegetables as can be eaten and prepared in a variety of ways.

* Second, on a daily basis, use some fermented food or drink. My favorite suggestion is Beet Kvass, for which a recipe is given in Nourishing Traditions, because it is also helpful for liver cleansing. Drink three times a day. There are many other fermented foods and beverages described in Nourishing Traditions. These enzyme-rich foods inherently ease the energy we must use in digestion.

* Third, use Celtic sea salt only, as this is the only salt with the trace elements present that are so vital to proper enzyme functioning. Fourth, daily castor oil packs over the liver area for one hour each day. These packs aid digestion, detoxify the bowels, and cleanse the liver. These fundamental changes usually will have a dramatic impact on your symptoms within one month and, unlike many therapies, the benefits will increase, not diminish, over time. Odd uses For A Food Dehydrator:with liveitup.net.au!

Sure, they make great fruit roll-ups and excellent dehydrated mushrooms and beef jerky but what else can you use your EziDri food dehydrator for?

Be creative! Or pay heed to the old adage that necessity is the mother of invention. The best way to get your money's worth out of any kitchen appliance is to actually use it! Read on for other useful ways you can put your EziDri food dehydrator to work.

Raw food diet
If you're on a raw food diet, a dehydrator can help you maintain variety in the kinds of foods you eat. If you dehydrate foods at medium or lower heat, almost all of the enzymes are retained.

Drying pasta
If you make your own pasta, you'll know that if it has any moisture in it before storage, it will go mildewy fairly quickly. You can dry it efficiently and quickly in your EziDri dehydrator. Dry for 2 to 4 hours on a medium setting and store in airtight containers. Remember, you can make the most wonderful pasta dough by hand, or even with a breadmaking machine, and instead of using water as the moisture content, use vegetable juices such as carrot, spinach or capsicum. Or, add homemade vegetable powders to create flavour and interest. Use the spaghetti or fettuccine extrusion nozzles on the Samson 6-In-1 or the Oscar Vitalmax Juicer … how easy is that?

Cooked pasta
You can actually dry cooked pasta in your EziDri dehydrator and break it into bite size chunks before storing in airtight containers. When you need it, simply rehydrate in a bowl of boiling water and it takes just 2 to 3 minutes. Excellent for when you have leftover meals and you want to stretch them a little further without a lot of extra effort.

Freshening up crackers Don't waste money on crackers, biscuits, chips or even cereal that has passed its freshest state. If you find they're a little stale, recrisp them by laying them out in a single layer on the EziDri drying trays and turn on for about an hour on medium.

Humidifier
If you find the air in your home is quite dry, particularly during the cooler months, you can actually use your EziDri dehydrator to humidify it back to a more comfortable condition. Position a few containers of water in the trays of your EziDri and turn on to high. As the water evaporates, the air will become more moist.

Air freshener
You'll notice when using your EziDri dehydrator that the air fills with the aromas of whatever you are drying. Well did you know that you can deliberately use your EziDri to perfume the atmosphere in your home? Simply by placing aromatic fruits or botanicals in the dehydrator, you can create a beautiful perfume, without any of the chemicals used in commercial air fresheners. Try citrus, lavender or a variety of herbs. Aromatherapy
Yes, it's even an aromatherapy diffuser! Lay a few non-toxic branches or aromatic plants on the trays of your EziDri dehydrator and turn on to medium. Old bread moistened with water will help to diffuse the scent of vanilla essence. Lavender, rosemary and rose petals are all delightful.

Breadcrumbs
Whenever you have bread that doesn't get eaten, it's a shame to throw it out. Dry it in your EziDri food dehydrator and once it's crisp, either crush it manually or give it a quick whiz in your food processor. While you're at it, you can add herbs or citrus peel that you may have dried before, or vegetable powders to add extra flavour. Flavoured breadcrumbs are perfect for chicken, fish fillets or veal cutlets, and great for stuffing recipes.

Pot pourri
Tailor make your own pot pourri combinations to suit your tastes and the materials you have on hand. The EziDri food dehydrator is the best tool for the job as it dries all the elements perfectly yet still allows them to retain their beautiful perfumes. Try various flower petals, fruit peels, pine needles, herbs, grasses, woods and spices.

Fire starters
Turn citrus peels into the best fire starters you've ever used. Citrus doesn't break down on compost heaps because of its antibacterial properties and in fact, it inhibits the break down of the other matter. When you peel citrus fruits, simply cut the skins into strips and dry to a crisp. When you light them, the oils will flare up and burn for a decent length of time. With no water content, they'll burn beautifully.

Pet treats
Don't overlook your pooch or kitty-cat. Pigs' trotters and snouts and other meats are very welcome treats when dehydrated; pets love them! So you see, EziDri food dehydrators are very valuable appliances. You'll have heaps of fun trying new ideas and seeing what new things you can create.
