Researchers from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences in California have recently published results about evidence-based benefits from a single massage treatment.

Different types of massage therapy have shown to reduce stress, enhance well-being, reduce pain and cortisol levels post surgery, enhance immune system functioning, lower levels of natural keller cells, and address levels of anxiety, depression, perceived stress, vitality and general health.

Stress affects 1 in 3 Australians* in a negative way, and all of us in a positive way, at times. Stress is Nature's way of keeping us alert to danger and therefore alive, so it very much serves a useful purpose. Without a little stress to keep him alert for danger and responding quickly, our caveman ancestor wouldn't have lasted long. The heightened awareness in all senses, the surge of adrenaline and physiological response e.g. change in heartbeat and redistribution of oxygen carrying blood, all increased the chance of surviving. Once danger had either been fought off or fled from, the body returned to its normal state. We still have that fight or flight response, yet most of us, thankfully, rarely have life or death situations to deal with at work or home, it only feels like that. Therein lies the problem.

Most of what stresses us isn't actually real, it's made up of our thoughts, our perceptions of an event or person's actions and the various scenarios (the What Ifs and If Onlys) we play over and over in our heads. In fact, many of us spend a great deal of time in the Past or the Future, and rarely in the Present. Think about it, even while you are reading this, at least part of your brain is thinking about all the things you need to do or haven't done yet. We often set ourselves unrealistic numbers of tasks to complete in a day, then beat ourselves up for not working hard enough, or else simply give up and slip into overwhelm.

A build up of stress impacts all areas of our lives including our health, ability to reproduce, our relationships, success in business, finances and our overall level of happiness and satisfaction.

When you change your mindset, your way of processing and evaluating the world, and you'll notice the stress easing away. You'll sleep more easily, think more clearly, allow your body's natural healing powers to work, and the vitality will show in your face and body. What Makes You Happy: by Kate at Plan of Attack!

Research suggests that the ultimate aim of most people is to "be happy" and the most significant factor that attributes to our happiness is our health (yes, health and not wealth, 'though it comes in a close 2nd). However, it is often our preoccupation with accruing the wealth that keeps us from achieving our ultimate goal of happiness because the stress associated with acquiring the wealth can be so detrimental to our health.

Stress, in general terms, is the mind/body response to a feeling of powerlessness. It is a psychological reaction to events (physical or mental) that exceed our current coping threshold. Generally, it occurs in situations where we feel threatened, challenged or harmed or situations that involve a change of some description that is outside our current coping comfort zone. (Note that it doesn't have to be a negative event either.)

For example, have you recently: " Lost someone or something significant in your life? " Suffered a serious illness or injury? " Moved house, changed job, got married, taken a promotion or undergone some other significant change in lifestyle? " Set an unrealistic expectation of yourself?

If the answer to any of these questions was 'yes' it is likely that you are stressed. Check the muscles in your neck and shoulders, do they feel tense? Worrying does nothing. Taking action alleviates the pain.

Self-esteem is the most effective antidote to depression, anxiety or stress. It allows us to take action and it is virtually impossible to be active and depressed at the same time. Action and self-esteem go hand-in-hand because self-esteem is the link between who you are and what you do.

There are many different techniques you can use to create a positive belief about yourself, here are some you can implement immediately:

Meditate on a daily basis.

Keep a Gratitude book.


Make a poster of your strengths.

Exercise! 30 minutes per day is a good bear minimum.

Re-assess your priorities. Get back in touch with your values and what is important to you now.

Short and Sweet:Tofu Vegetable Curry!


This recipe showcases the Indian practice of tempering spices in oil. * 2 tblsp coconut oil * 1 tsp cumin seeds * 1 tsp turmeric * 1 tsp coriander powder * ½ tsp salt * 2 medium carrots, sliced * 1 cup frozen peas * 1 pound tofu, cut into ½-inch cubes * ¼ cup water or vegetable stock * ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional) * 1 cup coconut milk * salt to taste

Heat the coconut oil in a large, heavy skillet over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and fry until the seeds just begin to pop. Add the turmeric, coriander, salt and sauté for 1 minute. Add the carrots, peas, tofu and combine with the spices, cooking for about 5 minutes. Add the water, pepper flakes, coconut milk and salt. Cover and cook over low heat until the vegetables are tender. Serve over brown rice.

Laughter is the best medicine!

No one believes seniors . . . everyone thinks they are senile. An Elderly couple was celebrating their sixtieth anniversary. The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to their old neighbourhood after they retired.

Holding hands they walked back to their old school. I t was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk they'd shared where Andy had carved 'I love you, Sally.'

On their way back ho me , a bag of money fell out of an armored car, practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up, but not sure what to do with it, they took it home. There, she counted the money: fifty-thousand dollars!

Andy said, 'We've got to give it back.'

Sally said, 'Finders keepers.'

She put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic. The next day, two FBI men were canvassing the neighborhood looking for the money and knocked on the door.

'Pardon me, but did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armored car yesterday?'

Sally said, 'No.'

Andy said, 'She's lying. She hid it up in the attic.'

Sally said, 'Don't believe him, he's getting senile.'

The agents turn to Andy and began to question him.

One says: 'Tell us the story from the beginning'

Andy said, 'Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday.

' The first FBI guy turns to his partner and says, 'We're outta here.
