How to create your own Positive Body Image:

When you're in a neutral or good mood, go and stand in front of a full length mirror, take all your clothes off and focus on finding just one thing you like about your body. It might be as tiny as the shape of your belly button or your ring finger. Keep the focus on the positive and over time and with repeated contact in front of the mirror, that one thing will turn into two things you like about your body.
This process will snowball and before long you will find a greater degree of acceptance in your body shape, no matter how bad you think you actually look. This has been proven with research in the USA. You can use your mirror as a long term tool for self-acceptance. Most women who don't love their body are OK with their faces; this is because of the repeated contact day in, day out with the mirror: to style your hair, to apply make-up, to brush your teeth, etc.
Exactly the same process can work with your body.

Whatever you focus on, you will find more of. It makes a lot of sense to focus on the positive. Every Body Is Beautiful, go find your own inner beauty and let it shine through to the outside so we can all enjoy it! The Hidden Menace( part 2)- improving Oestrogen Balance: How to Rid The Body of Bad Oestrogen Metabolites: By Nirala Jacobi ND ( USA)

The Hidden Menace - Part 2 - Improving oestrogen balance: How to rid the body of "bad" oestrogen metabolites By Nirala Jacobi ND (USA) I was quite pleased with myself for being in the Zeitgeist when SBS aired a program called "Men in Danger" after I posted last week's blog. The program directly addressed the topic of the blog: environmental chemicals like phthalates causing all kinds of mayhem, including dropping men's sperm count by 50% in the last 50 years!

The next day I received a post from my US Naturopathic Doctor forum asking for help on locating a medical supply company that offered phtalate-free IV tubing and bags. I realized then, once again, how ubiquitous these chemicals are in our life. It is virtually impossible to live completely free from xenoestrogens

Xenoestrogens are a class of chemicals which are known "endocrine disruptors". These can act like oestrogens in your body, thereby increasing your chance of developing oestrogen dependant conditions such as breast cancer. Also discussed last week were specific detox pathways in your liver that help metabolise this volatile hormone.

This week's topic will investigates

IMPROVING OESTROGEN BALANCE- HOW TO RID THE BODY OF BAD OESTROGENS:

a. improve liver clearance

Your body's total oestrogen levels depend on your own production of this hormone, outside sources (xenoestrogens), and how well you can get rid of it through your liver (metabolise it).

In the last 10 years, one of the most important discoveries in the natural health industry has been indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its isolate DIM. These are compounds from the brassica vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage) that help push oestrogen toward the beneficial oestrogen metabolite. This process mainly occurs in your liver. Make sure you eat plenty of these vegetables, but if you need extra help your natural health care provider can guide you to products that concentrate I3C and DIM, thus eliminating the need to consume huge quantities of broccoli.

Research has shown that I3C and DIM can prevent certain types of cancers.

b. improve digestive function

Once oestrogen is metabolized in your liver it gets packaged up for excretion through your bowels. Your bowels are host to trillions of organisms. Most are beneficial and help with many functions, but some bad organisms produce an enzyme that destroys the packaging around the oestrogen, thus allowing it to be reabsorbed and added once again to the oestrogen pool. Improving bowel function means making sure you have a good balance of beneficial bacteria. If you have a history of antibiotic use that exceeds 2-3 courses in the past 10 years, you may benefit from taking a good acidophilus product. I find that most people who have dysbiosis (gut overgrowth of bad organisms) cannot reestablish this healthy balance with diet alone.

c. lose weight

Fat is one of the tissues capable of oestrogen production. Very overweight and obese people tend to be more at risk to develop cancer partly due to the fact that fat can efficiently convert testosterone to oestrogen. Fat also serves as an excellent storage for xenoestrogens (chemicals that act like oestrogens)

I always tell people that if exercise were a pill, everyone would take it. Exercise has tremendous health benefits, one of them being fat loss.

Conclusion All this complicated talk about xenoestrogens has probably left you feeling somewhat uneasy. It is never my intention to contribute to the general feeling of helplessness that pervades our society. Rather, I hope I have provided you with some useful tips on how to reduce your risk of xenoestrogenic exposures.

Do Smokers Smoke Because They Choose To?: By Jonathan Wills!

We hear a lot about freedom of choice these days but here's a choice which might need closer examination:

Do smokers smoke because they choose to?

Think about that question for a moment. Whether you're a smoker or non-smoker I bet you think the answer is pretty obvious. If you posed this question to passers-by in the high street what would their answer be? Smokers either choose to smoke or they don't - it's simple isn't it? So do they or don't they? Or are you beginning to think the answer might be they do and they don't!

As a smoker for more than thirty years I know what my answer was while I was a smoker. "Of course I choose to smoke. Don't those anti smoking campaigners realise it's just a matter of free choice? Oh and by the way, when I'm ready to stop I'll choose to stop, but I won't stop because you want me to…" At least that's what I used to believe.

But what about the rest of us? What do you think the answer is? Well I can fill you in with the results of a survey I took on World No Tobacco Day. The day when smokers all over the world are supposed to have a crack at quitting is the same day every year, May 31, but precious few people seem to know about it! 95% of people told me they didn't have clue it was World No Tobacco Day. So come on Queensland let's raise the profile of this very important day.

I was in the Queen Street Mall in Brisbane with my clipboard and pen but I wasn't just interested in what smokers think. I was also wanted to know thoughts and attitudes of non-smokers. After all non-smokers make up eighty percent of the Australian adult population and for the most part it's non-smokers who are defining our attitudes towards smoking as well as the laws and social norms that govern where and when the so called "habit" is allowable. Smokers have precious little say in things these days, as they're no doubt aware. So their views are pretty insignificant by comparison! Smokers don't abandon me here! I was one of you for most of my life, just read on and you might just learn something that will help you know yourself a bit better.

So what does you're average punter think? Well, fully 83% of non-smokers believe smokers smoke because they choose to and four out of five smokers or ex-smokers believe the same. That's a very high proportion but it's one of the most fundamental myths about smoking! And because so many people believe it, smokers and non-smokers alike, this myth is perpetuated.

Let me explain by asking a couple of related questions. Do you think alcoholics choose to become alcoholics? Ask Dicko Dickson, I'm sure he'll tell you he no more chose to become an alcoholic than he might choose to get up and sing on stage for Australian Idol! Have a think about this for a moment: Do you believe people who take heroin wake up one morning and say to themselves "Right that's it, today I'm deciding to be an addict. I've chosen now to forsake my work and career, my family and home and I look forward to losing the lot and can't wait to be on the street begging for money". Of course they don't choose to become addicts. The very nature of addiction denies any free choice. If they had any real choice about it they'd choose to stop.

So you see smokers, just like all other drug addicts never chose to become smokers. I'll concede that they did choose to light the first experimental cigarette and all smokers start smoking for a variety of stupid reasons. But the point I'm making is that they didn't make a decision to become a smoker for the rest of their lives.

So when you hear hounded and outcast smokers say "Back off - it's my choice to smoke", rest assured this is nothing more than an attempt to justify why they continue to do so. It's got nothing to do with free choice. When I realised this as a smoker it was a revelation. For years I'd been telling myself I chose to smoke and I believed it with my heart and soul. Now I know different and having made the decision to stop I've never looked back.

Even if you're not a smoker but you know someone you care about who smokes you can help them quit by explaining this fundamental self delusion. Ironically, when smokers accept this truth, that they have no choice, they in fact take the first step towards becoming free!

The Lazy Way To Meditate: Proven Success!

The benefits of meditation on the mind and body have been known for thousands of years and have recently been validated in scientific studies. Unfortunately, many people find it difficult to meditate and give up without receiving these benefits. This problem has now been solved with the release of a powerful audio technology called Holosync that sends a very specific stimulus to the brain and creates states of deep meditation, quickly and easily.

Stimulating the brain with Holosync releases stress-reducing chemicals that are highly pleasurable. Most people go easily into a deep, trance-like meditative state normally only attained by experienced monks who have been meditating for over 20 years. In fact, EEG studies show the brain patterns experienced are actually deeper than those attained by monks.

As new neural pathways connect and synchronise the two sides of the brain, individuals develop what scientists call "whole brain functioning," which improves learning, intuition, mental clarity, creativity, concentration, and intelligence, as well as amazing quantum leaps in insight and self-awareness.

New research also reveals that even short-term exposure to Holosync creates significant increases in DHEA which is a precursor, or source ingredient, to virtually every hormone your body needs and is a buffer against stress-related hormones . It is a key determinant of physiological age. When DHEA levels are high, the body is at its peak - vibrant, healthy, and able to combat disease effectively.

Holosync also increases your ability to deal with stress and releases emotions such as anger, fear, sadness and anxiety. When Holosync is used regularly over time, many people discover that dysfunctional feelings and behaviours fall away - even those that have stubbornly resisted change in the past.

Laughter is the best medicine!

An old man was walking down a country lane when a frog jumped out in front of him and said; "If you kiss me i'll turn into a beautiful princess." The old man picked up the frog and carefully put it in his coat pocket. "Didnt you hear me screamed the frog"? "Kiss me and I'll turn into a gorgeous, nubile princess !." The old man said:" at my age I'd just as soon have a talking frog!"

Quote of the week!

When you get all you want and you struggle for pelf,
and the world makes you king for a day,
then go to the mirror and look at yourself
and see what that man has to say.
For it isn't your mother, your father or wife
whose judgment upon you must pass,
but the man, whose verdict counts most in your life
is the one staring back from the glass.
He's the fellow to please,
never mind all the rest.
For he's with you right to the end,
and you've passed your most difficult test
if the man in the glass is your friend.
You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world,
down the highway of years,
and take pats on the back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
if you've cheated the man in the glass.
